     He married Anna Gustafson in Golden, Jefferson County, Colorado, on 28 April 1922.2,1,3,10

He was enumerated as Ralph C Smalley, age 56, born in Nebraska, a mailman for city delvery, and had completed 1 year of high school. She was shown as Anna C Smalley, wife, age 52, born in Ohio and had completed 1 year of high school. Their home was owned and valued at $3000. They had lived in the same place in 1935.11

     Anna Gustafson was born on 23 November 1887 in Genoa, Ottawa County, Ohio.1
     She married George A. Troup in Page City, Logan County, Kansas, on 2 September 1906.1 Anna became a widow at her husband's death in 1918.1
     She married Ralph Clinton Smalley, son of Lafayette Pierce Smalley and Rosa Ella Shipman, in Golden, Jefferson County, Colorado, on 28 April 1922.2,3,4,1
     Anna and Ralph appeared on the 1940 U.S. census taken on 12 April 1940 at 120 W 4th in Goodland, Sherman County, Kansas. Longtime resident, Anna Smalley, died. Anna S. Smalley, a longtime Goodland resident, died Thursday at the Good Samaritan Center, Goodland, where she had been a resident the past three years. She was 96. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the First Christian Church, Goodland with Rev. Ed Seal officiating. Entombment will be in the Fairmount Mausoleum, Denver. Friends may pay their respects at Koons Chapel, Goodland, from 12 noon until 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The daughter of Otto and Eva Gustafson, she was born Nov. 23, 1887 at Genoa, Ohio. She came to western Kansas with her parents as a small child where they homesteaded land in the Page City area. She attended schools at Page City. On Sept 2, 1906 she married George A. Troup at Page City. The couple moved to Goodland in 1906 where her husband was employed as an engineer for the Rock Island Railroad. He died in 1918. She married Ralph Smalley June 28, 1922 in Golden, Colo. The couple made their home in Goodland. He died in 1944. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Goodland, Rebekah Lodge No. 177 and the Past Noble Grand Club, Goodland. Preceding her in death in addition to her husbands were her parents, a son and a daughter. Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy T. Harris, Aurora, Colo; a sister, Tecia Slack, Falls Church, Va; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial in her name has been established to benefit the Good Samaritan Center, Goodland. Donations may be left at Koons Chapel or the Good Samaritan Center.1
She was buried on 7 May 1984 in Fairmount Mausoleum, Denver, Denver County, Colorado.1

     In Washington Township, Sherman County, Kansas, she appeared on the 1900 U.S. census taken on 13 June 1900 in the household of her parents Lafayette and Rosa Ella Smalley. She was listed as Lake A. Smalley, age 10, born Mar 1890, in Kansas, her father born in Ohio and her mother in Illinois. She had attended school for 8 months and could read and write.6

She was shown as Lake Elliott, wife, age 50, born in Kansas, and had completed 4 years of high school. They owned their property valued at $1000. They were living in the same place in 1935.11
     Lake died on 31 October 1978 in Albany, Linn County, Oregon, at age 88.9,1,2,4

Rites Friday. Lake Elliott, 88 Passes Tuesday. Mrs. Lake Aminda Elliott, 88, a long-time Brownsville resident, passed away tuesday evening (Oct. 31) at Sunset Care Center in Albany, following an extended illness. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) in the Fisher Funeral chapel in Albany, with the Rev. Lloyd Oliver officiating. Concluding services iwll be at Riverside Cemtery. Mrs. Elliott was born in 1890 at Edson, Kans. She lived there until 1917, when she---with her family---came to Oregon by train. They returned to Kansas the following year; but returned to Oregon in 1924 by car. She lived in the Central Linn area, first around Halsey and later in Brownsville, until 1974, when she moved ot Albany. She was a lifetime homemaker. She was married Dec. 26, 1911 at Edson, to Joseph Newton Elliot, sho preceded her in death on May 26, 1957. Mrs. Elliot was a longtime member of the Brownsville Christian Church and its Chrsitian Missionary Society. She is survived by two sons: Earl Joseph Elliott of Albany and Milton Luther Elliott of Brownsville, a sister, Mrs. Celia Pettibone of Burlington, Colo; firve grandchildren, 15 great grandhcildren and two great-grat-grandchildren. The family suggest that friends who wish may send memorials in her name to the Kidney Association of Oregon. Such may be taken or given by way of Fisher Funeral Home.9
Her body was buried on 3 November 1978 in Riverside Cemetery, Albany, Linn County, Oregon.12,13,14 The inscription on her grave marker reads: ELLIOTT, MOTHER, LAKE A. 1890 - 1978. This is on the same stone as her husband Joseph.15,16

JOE N. ELLIOTT HEART VICTIM. Joseph N. Elliott, 65, died Sunday morning at his home in East Brownsville of a heart attack. Final rites will be conducted for him this (Wednesday) afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Brownsville Christian church. Rev. Harold Williamson will officiate and burial will be in Riverside cemetery. Born in Kansas, Mr. Elliott had lived in Linn county since 1924, making his home in Halsey four years before coming here. He was a retired worked of the Brownsville Woolen Mill, serving as engineer there. He was married in Edson, Kans. in 1911 to Lake A. Asmalley, who survives. Also surviving are two sons: Earl J. Elliott of Salem and Milton L. Elliott of Brownsville; five grandsons, Sgt. Joseph R. Elliottt[sic], stationed at Phoenix, Ariz., and Gary, Ronald and Milton Elliott of Brownsville, and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four brothers, John, Bert and Luther Elliott of Edson, Kans. and Lee Elliott of Albany; and one sister, Mrs. Cora Parker of Milliken, Colo. At the servies, singers will be Mrs. Georgia Ann Morse and Mrs. Glenn Isom, with Mrs. Dick Bowley as organist. In charge of floral arrangements are Mesdames George Blain, Herman Wendal and Charles Lawler. Bearers are Vernon and Derald Elliott, Fred Johnson, Lester Albertson, Richard and Bob Smalley. Fisher Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.9
He was buried on 29 May 1957 in Riverside Cemetery, Albany, Linn County, Oregon.9,11 His grave marker inscription reads: ELLIOTT, FATHER, JOSEPH N. 1891 - 1957. This is on the same stone as his wife Lake.12,13

     Marvin died on 22 December 1958 in Albany, Linn County, Oregon, at age 62.3,2,1 A newspaper article was printed on 22 December 1958 in the Democrat Herald, Albany, Oregon naming Marvin. It read: Blaze Followed By Fatal Attack. An Albany man, Marvin Smalley, 62, suffered a fatal heart attack Sunday within hours after learning that a freak fire had damaged his home. Firemen said the blaze, apparently caused by sparks from the chimney, was put out by rain before it was discovered. Smalley learned of the damage and called firemen Sunday after reain leaked through a burned portion of the roof of his home at 629 Montgomery St. After temporary repairs were made to the roof, Smalley suffered a heart attack. He was taken to Albany General hospital, where he died early today (Additional details on page six.)12
     An obituary for Marvin Ur Smalley was published in the Democrat-Herald, Albany, Oregon on 22 December 1958. It read:
Heart Ail Claims Marvin Smalley. Marvin Smalley, 62, 629 Montgomery st., died early this morning in an Albany hospital following a heart attack. Born March 17, 1896, in Goodland, Kan., he came to Albany in 1937. He was parts manager for Densmoor Chevrolet Co. During World War I he served in France with the U.S. Army's Sunburst division. He was a member of Albany lodge No. 359, BPOE; Albany Post No. 10, American Legion; and was past president, past secretary and life member of Albany Aerie No. 2255, FOE. He is survived by his widow, Evelyn ; two sons, Richard of Portland and Donald of Great Falls, Mont; a brother, L. W. Smalley of Albany; four sisters, Mrs. Lake Elliott of Brownsville; Mrs. Lucy Albertson of Eugene; Mrs. C. L. Pettibone of Kanarado, Kan; and Mrs. Roy Everett of Goodland, Kan; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Fisher Funeral home at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Lester Jones of the First Christian church officiating. Elks ritualistic service will be given at the chapel. Military graveside services, at Riverside cemetery will be conducted by Albany Post No. 10, American Legion.13

Forthe past three years, she was confined close to the home, but never lost interest in current events in the community. Through the years she has made many friends, who will miss her sunny disposiiton. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Past Noble Grand, Royal Neighbors, and WIS Home Demonstration Unit. When her grandchildren came along, she delighted in having them visit her, and always had special treats ready for them.. The children in turn always wanted to stay with "Grandma". for they always knew that she loved ot have them with her. She is survived by her husband Roy, and two duaghters: Nellie of the home, and Emma (Mrs. Harold VanVleet) of Goodland; four grandchildren, Susan, Dianna, George, and Robert VanVleet; two sisters, Mrs. Lake Elliott, Brownsville, Oregon, and Mrs. Celia Pettibone, Kanorado, Kansas, and one brother, L. W. Smalley, Albany, Oregon. She was preceded in death by her parents, her infant daughter, and two sisters, Lucie Albertson and Laurene Collins, and two brothers, Marvin and Ralph Smalley. She was buried at Goodland Cemetery, Goodland, Sherman County, Kansas.13,14,5

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Fisher Funeral Home with Pastor Wayne Bryant officiating. Elks ritualistic services will be given by officers of Albany Lodge 359, BPOE, of which he was a member. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. He was born Nov. 28, 1900, at Goodland, Kans. and lived there and in Colorado, working as a railroader, before coming to Albany in 1950. In Albany he worked in auto parts distributing, most recently as a salesman with Toby's Auto Parts. He was a member of Albany First Christian Church, Elks lodge, in which he served the past 14 years as tiler, and of Albany Aerie 2255. Surviving are his widow, Evelyn, whom he married at Milwaukee Jan. 13, 1960; sons, Rev. L. B. Smalley of San Dimas, Richard of Portland and Donald of Albany; daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Mollett of Albany and Mrs. Vernon DeMott of Halsey; sisters Mrs. C. L. Pettibone, Konorado, Kan. and Mrs. Joe Elliott of Brownsville; 18 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.12
His body was buried on 6 June 1969 in Riverside Cemetery, Albany, Linn County, Oregon.11 His grave marker inscription reads: L. W. 'SPIKE' SMALLEY. NOV 28, 1900 JUNE 2, 1969.13

     Laurene Jane Smalley appeared on the 1905 state census in Washington Township, Sherman County, Kansas, on 1 March 1905, in the household of her parents, Lafayette Pierce Smalley and Rosa Ella Smalley. She was shown as Laurene Smalley, age 4, born in Kansas.5
     She appeared on the 1910 U.S. census taken on 3 May 1910 in Washington Township, Sherman County, Kansas, in the household of her parents Lafayette and Rosa Ella Smalley. She was listed as Laurene Smalley, age 9, born in Kansas.6

Collins, age 30, born in Kansas, first married at 20, occupation laborer at grain elevator company. She was listed as Laurene Collins, wife, age 29, first married at 19. They lived in a rented dwelling at a monthly rent of $25. Their children Nyal, Vernon, Betty and Leora were listed as living with them.10
     Laurene died on 19 November 1942 in Niagara area, Marion County, Oregon, at age 41.11,12,1,2,3,4
     An obituary for Laurene Jane Smalley was published in the Oregon Statesman, Salem, Oregon on 20 November 1942. It read:
Mill City Woman Killed by Train Near Niagara. GATES, Nov. 19--Mrs. Joseph Collins, 42, was killed when hit by a logging train while crossing a railroad trestle one-fourth mile west of niagara about 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Collins and her 17year-old son were returning from a walk in the woods and were within 15 feet of the east end of the trestle when they suddenly saw the train approaching. The mothr became panic stricken and ran the wrong way, toward the train which was proceeding west. The boy jumped from the trestle and was not hurt. The body was dragged 85 feet by the engine, according to ''Bub" Henderson, Southern Pacific fireman who witnessed the accident. The body was taken to Stayton to the Weddle Funeral home after consultation with L.E. Barrick, county coroner. The Collins family came to Mill City recently from Colorado. Mr. Collins is employed in the Mill City Manufacturing plant at Mill City. Other survivors include five children, the oldest the 17-year-old boy who was with his mother before the accident.12
She was buried at Lone Oak Cemetery, Stayton, Marion County, Oregon.13

     He married Laurene Jane Smalley, daughter of Lafayette Pierce Smalley and Rosa Ella Shipman, in Sherman County, Kansas, on 20 March 1920.3,4,5,6
     In Liberal, Seward County, Kansas, Joseph and Laurene appeared on the 1930 U.S. census taken on 14 April 1930. He was enumerated as Joe C.      Commodore Perry O'Neal was born on 14 April 1835 in Franklin County, Indiana.1,2 It is probable that he was named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, a hero of the War of 1812. He was the son of Thomas O'Neal and Sarah Lollar.
     He appeared on the 1850 U.S. census taken on 12 August 1850 in Sand Creek Township, Bartholomew County, Indiana, in the household of his mother Sarah O'Neal. He was listed as Perry ONeal, along with his brothers, George, Thomas, James and Edward and his sisters, Safrona and Rebecca. He was age 16, born in Indiana and attended school.3
     He married Margaret Jane England, daughter of William Logsdon England and Mary Jane Walker, in Davis County, Iowa, on 25 February 1858. They were married at the home of Margaret's parents. The marriage record uses the names C. P. O'Neal and A. J. England, which is in error for Margaret's name..4
     On 11 July 1860 Commodore and Margaret appeared on the 1860 U.S. census taken in Fabius Township, Davis County, Iowa. He was listed as Perry Oneal, a 25 year old farmer with $200 personal estate, born in Indiana, who could not read or write. She was listed as Margaret Oneal, a 26 year old female, born in Illinois.. Their daughter Mary was listed as living with them. Also in their household was Rebecca Margaret O'Neal, age 14. Rebecca was Commodore Perry's sister.5 In 1865 Commodore and Margaret moved to California, They traveled over the California Trail, with their daughter Mary Ann and other family members.
     In Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California, on 12 July 1870 Commodore and Margaret appeared on the 1870 U.S. census. He was enumerated as Perry Oneil, farmer, age 33, born in Indiana, with personal property valued at $1000. She was shown as Margt J. ONeil, a white female, age 36, keepg house, born in Illinois.. Their children Mary and John were listed as living with them. Also in the household was Chang age 20, born in China, a servant. His brother, James O'Neal, was listed next door.6 In 1870 Commodore and Margaret moved to Lane County, Oregon, Their two children, Mary Ann and John came with them. On 26 October 1870,Commodore Perry O'Neal purchased real estate from W. F. Bryant and his wife Hester, in Lane County, Oregon. The property was described as the NW 1/4 of the SE 1/4, the N 1/2 of the SW 1/3 and Lot No 3 in Section 18, Township 19 South, Range 3 West and Lot No 4 in Section 12, Township 19 South, Range 4 West containing 168.89 acres more or less.. The land was located about four miles west of the site where Creswell was established a few years later. The consideration was $500.7 Commodore Perry, as the father of the bride, attended Mary Ann O'Neal and John Howard Bond's wedding in the home of her parents, Creswell area, Lane County, Oregon, on 18 June 1876.8
     On 9 June 1880 in Coast Fork Precinct, Lane County, Oregon, Commodore Perry and Margaret appeared on the 1880 U.S. census. He was listed as C. P. Oniel, a married 45 year old farmer who had been unemployed for 2 months of the previous year, unable to read or write, born in Indiana. She was listed as Margaret Oneil, wife, age 46, occupation keeping house, with health notation of rheumatism, born in Illinois. Their children John, Edward and George were listed as living with them. Also in the household was Margaret's 77 year old father William Logsdon England.9 Commodore Perry O'Neal appeared on the 1880 Census Agricultural Schedules on 9 June 1880 in Coast Fork Precinct, Lane County, Oregon. He was listed as the owner of 165 acres: 25 tilled, 10 meadow and 130 woodland and forest. The value shown for his farmland, fences and buildings was $835; for implements and machinery $75; and for livestock $$200. He had paid wages to one person during the year of $40 and the farm production was $150. On his grass lands he had two acres mown, for three tons of hay. His animals included 2 horses, 3 milch cows, 6 sheep, 15 swine, 36 poultry in the henyard and 100 others. The farm had produced 100 pounds butter, 200 dozen eggs, 70 bushels of oats from 4 acres, 180 bushels of wheat from 20 acres, 25 bushels of Irish potates from 1/4 acre, 100 bushels of apples from 50 trees on 2 acres. Also 40 cords of wood had been cut at a value of $80.10
     Commodore Perry O'Neal filed his homestead entry number 4058 on 9 April 1883 for land in Lane County, Oregon, described as south half of the southwest 1/4 and the south half of the southeast 1/4 of Section 18, Township 19 south, Range 3 west, containing 164.53 acres. This land adjoined the property he had purchased in 1870. Homestead proof was filed by Commodore Perry O'Neal on 11 October 1890 with the land office at Roseburg, Douglas County, Oregon, In his testimony he stated that he with his wife and three children had resided on the property continuously from April of 1883. He had made improvements of a house, hen house, fencing and orchard for a value of $500. He had cultivated four acres, and had raised crops for seven seasons. His description of his property was: "It is hilly, and covered with brush and timber. It is grazing land. It only valuable for grazing and farming." He signed with his mark (X.) The Patent for his homestead was issued by the United States of America to Commodore Perry O'Neal 30 June 1891 described as S1/2SE and SESW and SWSW of Section 18, Township 19S, Range 3W in Lane County, Oregon, A transcript of the patent was copied into the Lane County Deed Records 18 Oct 1937.11 Commodore became a widower at his wife's death on 13 May 1897.12,13,14
     In Creswell Precinct, Lane County, Oregon, on 18 June 1900 Commodore Perry appeared as head of household on the 1900 U.S. census. He was listed as Commodore Oneal, a white male, born Apr 1835, age 65, widowed, born in Indiana, his father born in New York, his mother born in North Carolina. He was a farmer, not unemployed the previous year, could not read or write, spoke English and owned his farm free of mortgage. Other members of the household were his sons, John, Edward and George, all unmarried.15
     Commodore Perry O'Neal appeared on the state census in Creswell Precinct, Lane County, Oregon, on 18 April 1905. He was listed as C.P. ONeal, a widower age 73, a farmer born in Indiana. Other members of the household were A.J. ONeal age 36, E. C. ONeal age 32, and G.E. ONeal age 30..16
     Commodore Perry appeared on the 1910 U.S. census taken on 13 May 1910 in Creswell Precinct, Lane County, Oregon. He was enumerated as Commodore P. O'Neal, a widower, age 74, born in Indiana. He was a farmer on a general farm, owned free of mortgage, working on his own account.. His children John, Edward and George were listed as living with him.17 On 22 May 1919,Commodore Perry O'Neal sold real estate to his three sons, John J. O'Neal, Edward C. O'Neal and George E. O'Neal, Creswell area, Lane County, Oregon. The property was described as The South half of the Southwest Quarter and the South Half of the Southeast Quarter and the Northwest Quarter of the Southeast Quarter and the North half of the Southwest Quarter and Lot No. 3, all in Section 18, Township 19 South, Range 3 West and Lot No. 4 in Section 13, Township 18 South, Range 4 West. By 2006 some of this land had been subdivided as Spencer View Estates.18
     Commodore Perry died on 12 July 1919 in Creswell area, Lane County, Oregon, at age 84. The death certificate states that the cause of death was general senility.19,2 His body was buried on 14 July 1919 in Creswell Cemetery, Creswell area, Lane County, Oregon.19,20,21,22 His grave marker inscription reads: COMMODORE P. O'NEAL; APR 14, 1835; JULY 12, 1919.23
     An obituary for Commodore Perry O'Neal was published in the Eugene Morning Register, Eugene, Oregon on 15 July 1919. It read:
Commodore Perry O'Neal Dies (Register Lane County Special) CRESWELL, Oreg. July 14. Commodore Perry O'Neal died at his home west of Creswell on Saturday July 12, at the advanced age of 84 years ? months and 28 days. He leaves surving [sic] him three sons and one daughter. He was one of the pioneer settlers and lived on his farm for over 50 years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and one of its elders. His funeral was held at the house Monday afternoon and interment was in the Creswell cemetery. Reverend Mr. Greer, local pastor of the Methodist church officiating.20

Although the England family history by Tom Goldrup shows the year as 1898, the published cemetery record for Creswell Cemetery shows year of death as 1897.12,2,3 She was buried at Creswell Cemetery, Creswell area, Lane County, Oregon.13,14 The inscription on her grave marker reads: MARGARET J. O'NEAL; SEP 16, 1833; MAY 13, 1897.15
